Practical Approach#

Learning Objectives#

After working through this topic, you should be able to:

  • explain why visualisation is important

  • employ a structured approach for creating visualisations

  • find help for getting started

Materials#

Here is screencast. These are the slides.

Additional Materials#

  • Chapter 7 of Calling Bullshit (Carl Bergstrom & Jevin West). Light read, important insights in particular how popular visualisations often try to mislead in more or less subtle ways. Also has some general insights into how to think about graphics. Some of the examples are available online

  • How Charts Lie (Alberto Cairo). Similar to Chapter 7 of Calling Bullshit, but the entire book is devoted to visualisations.

  • Better Data Visualizations (Jonathan Schwabish): Very extensive, with direct focus on science/economics. Some material in the screencast based on that.

  • The Functional Art (Alberto Cairo) and Show Me the Numbers (Stephen Few). Authoritative References if you want to become a data viz pro. Alberto Cairo has an interesting blog accompanying the book. Show Me the Numbers is more general than visualisation and also has lots of great material on tables.
